Small Bathroom Design Ideas

One of the most common issues we hear from our clients is they don’t know what to do for a small bathroom design. Space is a premium for UK homes, particularly in London, which means small bathrooms are the norm for many! Far too many of us can relate to the stress of designing or furnishing rooms with small awkward spaces.

Small Bathroom Design Inspiration

There are many things to consider when designing a small bathroom. A perfectly designed small bathroom should optimise all available space, to make the room appear and feel larger than it actually is.

Below are some of our favourite design ideas that will have your small bathroom still looking sumptuous in years to come.

Small Bathroom Ideas

We strongly believe that just because a bathroom is small, doesn’t mean it can’t feel open and luxurious. When designed by one our dedicated bathroom experts, a small bathroom can feel just as spacious as larger bathrooms. Below we’ve compiled some of the most important design considerations for compact bathrooms.

Wallpaper For Bathrooms

Using wallpaper in a bathroom is one of our favourite bathroom décor ideas, particularly for small bathroom designs.

It’s often said that small rooms are the perfect spaces to go wild with colour and extravagant patterns, and we couldn’t agree more!

We love using bold, eccentric patterned wallpaper for a feature wall and then pairing with contrasting tiles for further drama.

When possible, we love choosing a wallpaper that has a colour we can match brassware and accessories with, such as gold. In our opinion, feature walls look best along the same wall as the basin with a mirror.

Lighting

Arguably the most important consideration for a small bathroom remodel is lighting. Of course, natural light is always best and generally preferred.

However, many small and compact bathrooms don’t get much natural light. Spend some time assessing just how much natural light your bathroom gets.

Once you have a better understanding of this, it will guide you with finding the best lighting options for your space.

Lighting is key for making your room feel more open and spacious. If your bathroom is particularly dark and lacking in natural light, we highly recommend statement pendant lights! They make a statement whilst provide a luxurious aesthetic.

Bathroom Tiles

Tiles can make or break any bathroom design, but even more so with smaller bathrooms. To make your room appear larger and feel more spacious, opt for large format tiles on the walls and floors for a flowing seamless design.

However, this doesn’t mean small tiles are completely out of the question! Mix small tiles with different sized larger tiles to avoid a grid-like pattern, which can make your space feel small still.

We also love using two different types of tiles that create a stylish contrast, especially if they have different surface textures as this adds some much-needed depth.

Planning your small bathroom layout

In larger properties, many people choose to install a downstairs toilet or cloakroom. Or in some cases it’s not uncommon in older period style properties for the toilet to be in a separate room from the rest of the bathroom.

All of which are very small and compact and can be equally as difficult when undergoing a renovation.

Small Bathroom Installation

Our expert team have designed and installed many small bathrooms, downstairs toilets, and cloakrooms. Below we detail important technical considerations when dealing with a small bathroom, as well as our best design advice and product suggestions.

Assess your needs

One of the most important factors when designing a new layout for a small bathroom is to prioritise your space according to your needs. We can do a lot with a smaller space, but you will still need to prioritise.  The required functionality of your space will inform the overall aesthetics you choose, as well as the storage options you need to ensure your small bathroom complements your lifestyle.

Ask yourself questions such as:

Who uses this space and what are their needs?

If young children or people with disabilities will be using the bathroom, this can greatly affect the required layout.

Your floorplan isn’t just about the layout of your space, you must think about how the space will be used.

How much storage do we need?

Storage is often at a premium when space is limited, which is why it can be one of the most important things to consider when designing your ideal bathroom space.

Keep in mind that larger households typically require more options for the bathroom essentials.

What’s our preferred bathing style?

Do members of your household regularly run baths, or would a shower suffice?

If space allows, you might feel you need both!

We will help you make the most of every nook and cranny and add smart design solutions wherever we can.

It’s important to identify the location and entrance points of water and waste pipes, so you can plan your layout around this and avoid issues. Ideally all pipes like this should be concealed into the floor and walls where possible. Plus, by ensuring all pipes are not visible will result in a more spacious and seamless design.

Choices and style

There are many types off space saving sanitaryware such as compact toilets, basins and even baths! Compact toilets have a smaller projection and are typically rimless and designed to be wall hung.

Wall hung toilets and compact wall hung basins are great at creating the illusions of more floor space.

Similarly, there are many wall hung vanity units that are compact but offer a great storage solution.

Keeping your bathroom free from clutter aids in making the space feel more open. Mirrors are another great option to make your room feel larger and appear more spacious!

LED mirrors also offer more lighting resulting in a luxurious ambience.

Alternatively opt for an LED mirror cabinet for extra storage space!
