Traditional Bathroom Ideas

It may come as a surprise, but traditional bathrooms are still incredibly popular! Despite the increasing popularity for contemporary bathrooms, traditional styles like Edwardian or Victorian bathrooms still remain at the forefront of luxury bathroom design.

London Bathrooms

Many homes in the UK, particularly in and around London, are Victorian and Edwardian style properties. Period houses tend to have more character, making them perfectly suited to a traditional bathroom design.

Large windows, high ceilings and quirky alcoves are all perfectly attributes for a striking bathroom design. However, even if your home isn’t a period style property, that doesn’t mean a classic bathroom design is out of the question!

Traditional bathroom designs exude elegance and luxury as well as offering a timeless appeal that never goes out of style.

Traditional Bathroom Design Ideas

Create a statement with a freestanding bath

Our biggest recommendation when designing a traditional bathroom is to consider a freestanding bath. They are synonymous with period style bathrooms! Plus, they become the standout feature for any bathroom. Roll top baths are the epitome of classical design. With their elegant silhouette and solid cast iron frame, they are perfect for creating a stylish centrepiece. Pair with a floor-mounted bath shower mixer for a more striking impact.

Feeling creative? We supply a fantastic range of Victorian style cast iron baths that can be painted. Choose a colour to perfectly match your bathroom décor or opt for something bold and bright for a stylish contrast.

For the ultimate luxurious bathing experience, consider a copper freestanding bath. They are excellent heat conductors and will maintain water temperature for much longer – Ideal for long, sumptuous soaks.

Traditional Bathroom Taps

When browsing fixtures and fittings for a traditional bathroom design, it’s worth remembering that traditional bathroom taps now embrace their beloved classic style but benefit from state-of-the-art functionality and modern-day performance.

Chrome is a safe choice for any bathroom design, but for traditional styles we love embracing bolder tones such as gold, nickel, brass, and copper. Antique style brassware often features pronounced curves and intricate lever or cross head handles, resulting in a sophisticated vintage look.

For baths, particularly freestanding baths, we recommend floor-mounted bath shower mixers for a chic finishing touch. Deck mounted taps are our preferred choice for basins as they are more in-line with Victorian style, however we have many traditional wall mounted basin taps too.

Once you have decided on a finish for your brassware – add some warmth to your space with a vintage style towel radiator in the same finish as your taps.

Luxurious large vanity units

With any traditional bathroom design, we usually say bigger is better. The technology we have today to create sleek, compact bathroom furniture didn’t exist in Victorian times.

Bathroom furniture, such as vanity units, was generally quite large and freestanding. Therefore, if you want your traditional bathroom design to emulate these times as closely as possible, we highly recommend a large freestanding vanity unit if space allows.

However, if you are dealing with a smaller bathroom space, we have a wide range of wall-mounted, compact bathroom furniture that still provides that luxurious, vintage style.

Vintage style ceramics

Period style bathroom suites were generally white, much like they still are today. Except traditional ceramics have more elaborate detailing with pronounced edges and rims. We have a vast range of traditional bathroom suites that offer this elegant, vintage style. To enhance the look of your traditional white ceramics, consider a monochrome effect by opting for a black toilet seat and pairing with black accessories.

Looking for something more opulent? Double console basins with intricate stands make a real statement! For something truly striking and elegant, opt for one with a marble console or similar. If you want to create a classic style bathroom that emulates Victorian times as closely as possible, then a high-level toilet or low-level toilet is a great option and adds charisma.

Another addition that will perfectly complement your traditional bathroom suite whilst adding character is a bidet. They may have dwindled in popularity in recent years, but a bidet can make a solid addition to any bathroom scheme.
