3 ways to make your Powder Room more functional and stylish

3 ways to make your Powder Room more functional and stylish We think having a powder room in your home sounds more than just a little bit glamourous. They are often overlooked in home design, but they’re an important option to consider if you are thinking of adding an extra toilet space. We call it a powder room, but it can also be referred to as a “half bath”. Dating back to the 18th century, the origin of the name “powder room” comes from the closet-sized rooms where ladies would literally powder their wigs – this is actually where the expression “powdering one’s nose” is from! Our modern-day equivalents are thankfully free of wigs and powder and this small bathroom offers a moment of respite for guest and homeowners alike. A powder room is usually a small bathroom, including a toilet and sink area. You won’t commonly find a shower or bathtub in a powder room and they can frequently be found on the first floor of a home. Their purpose is for guests to use when visiting, without invading the more private space of your family bathroom. Because it’s a space that anyone who may pop round is likely to use, powder rooms are usually as stylish and inviting as they are functional. Whether you are looking to install a brand-new bathroom or looking to freshen up your bathroom space, here are 3 great ways to spruce up your powder room! Install an Under Counter Basin An under counter basin is one of the easiest ways to add space without sacrificing style. It’s also a very popular option because it allows you to keep the vanity area clear of clutter. Cleverly designed to sit flush with your choice of countertop, under count basins offer a luxurious and seamless finish. We tend to advise that these are used under marble or stone, however the design options are endless! There’s no doubt that undercounter basins help make the counter surface a real statement in a small bathroom space. To really complete this statement, we suggest choosing some sleek wall-mounted brassware. Go Bold Powder rooms will most likely be small, therefore a perfect space to be bold and daring with your design choice. This is a chance to really explore your inner designer! For example, we don’t think any bathroom is too small to handle a bold floor to ceiling wallpaper print. As a matter of fact, the smaller your powder room, the bigger the impact! Dark colours have historically been branded as gloomy and moody – and possibly even claustrophobic. We instead think that painting your powder room one dark colour can in fact help open up your small space. Especially when paired with reflective shiny elements such as mirrors and sliver tapware. These will help the light bounce around the room and really make your room pop. Incorporate a statement mirror No powder room is really complete without a stand out mirror to help you freshen up your makeup. For the best grooming experience, a Hollywood mirror in your powder room is the best solution. Surrounded by glitzy light bulbs, it really is the best way to brighten up your space and see yourself much clearer. This is particularly helpful in a small powder room with no or limited natural light coming through. Feel like a celebrity and add an easy touch of glamour – bonus, opt for one with LED bulbs that will last for ages! We’ve been transforming bathrooms in London. Minimalist Bathroom Design: Our Bathroom Makeover for Top London Blogger

Minimalist Bathroom Design: Our Bathroom Makeover for Top London Blogger Here at Kallums, we recently collaborated with top interior designer and blogger Ruth of Design Soda to completely transform her bathroom. Ruth wanted her new bathroom design to forgo all bathroom trends in favour for a timeless, minimalist bathroom design. Using high quality bathroom products that will stand the test of time to create a calm, relaxing bathroom for the family to enjoy. Kallums’ transformed a badly installed bathroom into a luxurious minimalist bathroom design There were many reasons we wanted to collaborate with Ruth, but there was one reason in particular that really stood out to us. Ruth had a bad experience with her previous bathroom installer and ended up with a badly installed bathroom. This resulted in numerous problems over the years such as exploding taps and loose fittings which caused multiple leaks. Despite paying for the leaks to be fixed as well as relaying tiles, some of the fittings continued to slowly leak through to the kitchen. Ruth’s original bathroom was only six years old and shouldn’t have needed a complete renovation that soon. Unfortunately, this is a common problem with bathrooms that are badly installed and something we hear from clients far too often! Bathrooms are our passion, and we find it deeply upsetting to hear from so many people the issues and expense caused from poorly installed bathrooms. Interview with Ruth from Design Soda: Why Minimalist Bathroom Design is Timeless Our collaboration was a great success and together we created a luxurious, minimalist bathroom design with premium quality products. Ruth was beyond thrilled with the results, as were we! A few weeks after the project was completed, we sat down for a quick catch up with Ruth to discuss all things bathrooms. We know it must be hard to choose, but what do you love the most about your new minimalist bathroom design? It is hard, there are so many elements I love, but undoubtedly the concrete basin from Kast is the showstopper piece, as a statement sink which isn’t in any way bling it’s the perfect design detail for our bathroom aesthetic. Obviously, a huge part of your bathroom design was forgoing bathroom design trends – but if you had to pick your current favourite bathroom trend, what would it be? Ooh that’s so hard, I like so many! I love the use of darker marbles that’s coming into vogue, stylised spaces, and also the cottagecore aesthetic with ornate patterned papers and bold colours. This is exactly why I avoided trends with our bathroom, there are just so many I like and I wanted to create a minimalist and timeless bathroom design.  What’s your favourite part of designing a new bathroom? The inspiration phase, I love collecting samples of materials, tiles and paint and playing with them to see what works together. I am drawn to so many kinds of tile and really enjoyed collecting samples and deconstructing the merits of different kinds. Once we were near to the finish line with installation, I also loved the excitement of seeing the vision for the bathroom coming together.   . What did you enjoy the most about working with Kallums bathrooms? I loved the wealth of quality products you stock, made with honest materials built to last. And having the expert tips and experience from Xavier’s careful eye with his pragmatic approach to the spatial constraints of our small period bathroom was intrinsic to creating the bathroom we have now. I also loved visiting the showroom for the presentation, it was great to be able to interact with the materials and see how different options felt and looked in the beautiful setting of your space.  Do you have and advice or tips for anyone planning a minimalist bathroom renovation? As bathrooms are such an investment it can feel overwhelming making long term decisions. I found using Pinterest super helpful, starting off with everything I loved or was drawn to I then interrogated each image I’d saved to hone down to the actual details I liked and then saved a scheme of materials and looks that worked in harmony and which represented the styles I most loved.  I couldn’t have been happier with my experience with Kallums planning our new bathroom. I had quite an exacting brief and a tight space, but Xavier’s knowledge and expertise made for a really smooth process and he had lots of great suggestions on layout and finishes. I couldn’t be happier with our new bathroom! Ruth from Design Soda We thoroughly enjoyed transforming Ruth’s bathroom and knowing she will no longer have to deal with multiple leaks from her previous badly installed bathroom. High quality bathroom installations are something we are deeply passionate about, as we know they are key to achieving the perfect new bathroom. That’s one of the main reasons we created our comprehensive bathroom installation service! Contact our expert team now to install your luxurious minimalist bathroom design. Creating a Minimalist Bathroom Design for top London Interior Designer

Creating a Minimalist Bathroom Design for top London Interior Designer Ruth approached Kallums Bathrooms in search of a timeless, calming space for her family. Inspired by our London showroom, she worked closely with one of our expert designers to bring her vision of a modern minimalist bathroom to life. Though she admired many trends, Ruth chose to strip back and focus on simplicity, materials, and texture to create a soothing, clutter-free environment. With limited space a common feature in London homes our team carefully designed a layout that maximised every inch. We concealed all exposed pipework to maintain clean lines and a seamless finish. A standout feature was the Nilo basin from Kast Concrete Basins, chosen in a rich ‘stone’ shade. Its defined shape and raw texture became a central design element, perfectly complementing dark grey tiles and a wall-mounted English oak vanity unit. Brushed nickel brassware from Coalbrook and Crosswater added subtle warmth and elegance, enhancing the earthy colour palette. To replace her previous plastic tub, Ruth selected a robust steel bath by Bette in classic white, paired with a Saneux bath screen. A rimless wall-hung toilet from Saneux completed the look, improving both hygiene and space efficiency. The result: a smart, stylish bathroom that feels spacious, serene, and beautifully minimal.

Jack and Jill Bathrooms

Jack and Jill Bathrooms Jack and Jill bathrooms continue to be a popular layout for new bathroom designs, particularly for families, offering convenience as well as style. If you are considering a new family bathroom renovation, this style of bathroom might be perfect for you. Read on to find out exactly what is a Jack and Jill bathroom (also known as a ‘his and hers’ bathroom) and what the benefits are. What is a Jack and Jill bathroom? Whilst not essential, having multiple bathing options such as a bath and a shower enclosure really helps make the bathroom more efficient for everyone. We understand not everyone has space for this in their bathroom, but if possible, we highly recommend in order to get the most benefit from your jack and jill bathroom design. Some people might not like the idea of having to share a bathroom, especially one that can be accessed from multiple rooms! However, we feel there is an easy solution to this for those times you want to relax on your own in the bathroom. Adding a lock to both doors can create privacy when needed! So you can enjoy a relaxing soak in the bath without worrying about being disturbed. Typically, Jack and Jill bathrooms are designed to have two entrances accessible from different rooms within a home – most commonly from two different bedrooms. They also have two separate basins, and if space allows, multiple bathing options such as a bath and shower. This type of bathroom design is great for families, especially when there isn’t space for two separate bathrooms. In our opinion, having two basins in a jack and jill bathroom is an absolute essential. Twin basins are key for convenience so the bathroom can be used by more than one person at a time. Without this, a jack and jill bathroom layout wouldn’t work as well. We often find that twin basins work best when paired with a double vanity unit, providing enough bathroom storage for the whole family. Benefits of Jack and Jill Bathrooms A jack and jill bathroom layout can bring many benefits to a homeowner, especially for a family home! Below we discuss some of the biggest advantages of choosing this style of bathroom design. Jack and Jill Bathrooms save space For many of us, we all understand that space is a luxury – particularly if you live in London! You may not have the space in your home to create more than one bathroom; or perhaps you want to utilise any spare space you have for something else. Creating one family bathroom that’s easily accessible for all is a great space saving option. When a Jack and Jill bathroom layout is created by an expert bathroom designer, the result is a luxurious family bathroom that maximises all available space whilst combining convenience with high-end style. Enjoy convenience with twin basins As briefly mentioned above, jack and jill bathrooms offer exceptional convenience and practicality for families. Having one bathroom that is designed to cater for every family member can make life much easier. For some families, trying to get everyone ready in the morning can be a challenge. Especially when everyone has to take turns in the bathroom! This style of bathroom removes that difficulty. Twin basins mean more than one person can brush their teeth at the same time. Plus, with multiple bathing options such as a bath and a shower – morning routines can be hassle free! Cost effective bathroom design solution  A shared family bathroom can be much more cost effective. The most obvious reason for this is having only one bathroom designed and installed is cheaper than having multiple bathrooms. This also means that as time goes on, you will only have one bathroom to maintain and repair if the issue arises. So, in the long run you save money on maintenance costs but also save time and money by only having one bathroom to clean. Whilst it may only be a small amount, you can also minimise water usage with just the one bathroom! KALLUMS BATHROOMS TOP TIP: Generally, this style of bathroom usually resides between two different bedrooms. Some people see this as a negative, as when you have guests over they must walk through a bedroom to access the bathroom. We have a solution to this! If space allows, the best option is to create a small cloakroom or downstairs toilets. This type of bathroom is one of the cheapest and easiest to create, due to only requiring a handful of products. Plus, it only takes up a small amount of space. Jack & Jill Bathroom Designs Here at Kallums, we’ve created some fantastic Jack and Jill Bathroom designs for our clients! We wanted to share some of our favourite bathroom designs with you to help spark ideas and inspiration for your next bathroom renovation project. One trend we are noticing is that many people are opting for this style of bathroom – just without the shared access! Also known as ‘his and hers’ bathrooms. These stunning designer bathrooms incorporate all the best elements from a jack and jill design, such as twin basins and multiple bathing options, but can only be accessed through one door! This seems increasingly popular for private ensuite bathrooms. Why you need a bathroom designer for your next bathroom renovation

Why you need a bathroom designer for your next bathroom renovation Are you thinking about a new bathroom design or a full bathroom renovation? Chances are, you’ve been looking online for new bathroom ideas and inspiration. And why wouldn’t you? Social media channels such as Pinterest and Instagram are a great way to get some bathroom design inspiration and discover the latest bathroom design trends! However, we’ve noticed this can also cause a few issues for homeowners and its why we usually always recommend hiring a bathroom designer for any bathroom renovation. The biggest issue we have come across is that the overwhelming amount of bathroom inspiration online leads people to believe they can easily design their own bathroom. However, what many people don’t realise until further down the line is that bathrooms are a lot more complex than they seem. Secondly, many people seem to believe that the beautiful designs they see online are unattainable or cost too much. Here at Kallums, we believe anything is possible and can tailor your new bathroom design to meet your budget. Below, we unpack all the reasons why you should consider using a professional bathroom designer for your next bathroom renovation. Using a Bathroom Designer for your London Bathroom Renovation What’s the best thing about hiring a bathroom designer? There are many advantages to hiring a bathroom designer, but the biggest advantage is their knowledge and expertise. Many people underestimate the complexity of designing a bathroom and try to take on the task themselves. There are many technical considerations with any bathroom and some bathrooms are more complex than others.  Trying to design a new bathroom without factoring in all the technical aspects can cause many problems and may result in your design being impossible to achieve. Ultimately causing a lot of stress and potentially wasting time and money depending how far into the bathroom renovation you were. That’s why we sincerely believe that the key to a great bathroom is to have it designed by a professional. The perfect bathroom should not only look great, but also offer excellent functionality that has been designed to suit your lifestyle and meets your individual or family needs. Designing a bathroom that ticks all the boxes requires a qualified, highly skilled, professional bathroom designer. Even though many people have a rough idea of what they would like for their new bathroom design, it can be difficult putting pen to paper and drawing out the plan. Whereas a bathroom designer can do all of this for you and use their expertise to recommend a bathroom design that is achievable and will produce high quality results. Hassle Free Bathroom Design and Renovation in London Why a fully managed bathroom design service is better Another benefit which seems to be regularly overlooked is that using a bathroom designer will make your bathroom renovation much less stressful. Many homeowners agree that undertaking any kind of renovations can be extremely stressful and heavily disrupt your daily life. Trying to plan and manage a new bathroom design yourself, whilst still juggling the pressures of daily life, can be incredibly stressful. Particularly if you don’t have any technical knowledge of bathrooms. Hiring a dedicated bathroom expert and letting them manage the design of your new bathroom will result in a stress-free experience, as well as peace of mind knowing everything will be done perfectly.
