Avocado Toilets & Dusty Pink Basins – The 70s Revival Nobody Expected

Avocado Toilets & Dusty Pink Basins – The 70s Revival Nobody Expected 28 August 2025 Avocado toilets, dusty pink basins, and gold taps are back in style – but should we really be letting them into our bathrooms? Avocado green toilets. Dusty pink basins. Gold taps that shimmer like jewellery. What once defined the boldness of the 70s and then fell into decades of ridicule is tiptoeing back into our bathrooms. Design magazines are buzzing colour is no longer confined to walls and tiles. Now, the fixtures themselves are stealing the spotlight. But here’s the question: are we embracing a daring new design renaissance, or simply repeating the avocado-coloured mistakes of the past? For some, this revival is irresistible. A coloured suite feels playful, personal, alive. In a world where sleek white sanitaryware has dominated for decades, injecting colour into basins, loos, and baths is a rebellious act, a way to say: this bathroom is mine. But the risks are real. Bathrooms are not like cushions or wall paint – they are an investment. Today’s statement pink loo could be tomorrow’s design regret, leaving homeowners wincing not only at the style but at the cost of ripping it out. There is, of course, a middle ground. A powder-blue basin paired with neutral tiling. A brushed-gold tap that brings warmth without overwhelm. A soft green vanity that nods to colour without dragging you into full retro nostalgia. Still, one debate keeps resurfacing: avocado toilets are back but should we let them? Colour isn’t just decoration – it’s a statement. But in the bathroom, every statement counts. What was once the nation’s most mocked bathroom choice is being rebranded as “vintage chic.” But will this comeback age like fine wine or will it haunt us once more, just as it did in the seventies? At Kallums, we believe great design should spark conversation and dare to divide opinion. Choose colour if it thrills you but never forget – the bathroom is where taste has the longest memory. If you’re considering bold colour choices, we can help balance personality with practicality, ensuring your bathroom is beautiful, timeless, and perfectly suited to you! start your journey

November’s Chocolate Brown Bathroom Obsession: Warm, Bold, Unforgettable

November’s Chocolate Brown Bathroom Obsession: Warm, Bold, Unforgettable As the crisp autumn air drifts in and November evenings grow longer, our spaces crave warmth, depth, and a touch of nostalgia. Enter the chocolate brown bathroom: a design choice that feels both luxurious and intimate, perfect for this time of year. Chocolate brown isn’t just a colour, it’s a mood. It’s rich, velvety, and enveloping. Imagine walking into a bathroom where every surface, from the walls to the cabinetry, is a deep, decadent shade of brown, absorbing the soft glow of pendant lighting. The effect? Instant comfort and a subtle drama that feels far from ordinary. To keep the space from feeling heavy, contrast is key. Crisp white basins and a classic white bathtub pop against the chocolate backdrop, creating a striking visual tension. These touches of brightness not only draw the eye but also maintain a sense of freshness in a room that otherwise whispers elegance and nostalgia. Bold doesn’t mean overbearing. A chocolate brown bathroom is daring yet timeless. It’s an ode to autumn evenings, to curling up with a hot drink, and to design that feels personal and intentional. Whether you’re renovating your home or imagining your dream bathroom, think deep, think rich, think chocolate brown. November may be chilly, but stepping into a chocolate brown bathroom is like wrapping yourself in a warm, sophisticated hug. It’s not just a space, it’s an experience. start your journey

A Fresh Take on Colour: Suzanne Jarvis’ Scallop Themed Teenager’s Bathroom

A Fresh Take on Colour: Suzanne Jarvis’ Scallop Themed Teenager’s Bathroom 15 July 2025 https://youtu.be/5MZoUhvjRQk When it comes to designing for teenagers, there is a fine balance between playful charm and timeless sophistication. Interior designer Suzanne Jarvis strikes that balance effortlessly in one of her projects, a scallop-themed bathroom created for a young client with a love for all things pink and white. But this is more than a colour story, it’s a masterclass in creating a space that grows with its owner. Teenage Style, Enhanced Teenage years are all about self-expression, experimentation, and identity and, the spaces young people inhabit should reflect that spirit. Suzanne’s brief was simple: a bathroom in pink and white that felt fun but not childish. As with all well-executed interiors, the real magic lies in the layers. Rather than leaning into cliché or overly sweet tones, Suzanne chose a mature, design-led approach to colour and texture. The result? A space that feels light, joyful, and distinctly personal without losing the clarity and polish of a grown-up bathroom. The Scallop Statement At the heart of the design lies the scallop motif – soft, arching shapes that echo throughout the room in both subtle and striking ways. We didn’t want to go too thematic,” says Suzanne. “Instead, we used the scallop as a visual thread – almost like a whisper of personality that runs through the whole space.” The blush-pink tiles, sourced from Bert & May, gently reflect the light, creating ever-changing shadow patterns – a subtle, elegant way to introduce movement and depth. A Space to Grow With One of the project’s most successful qualities is its longevity. Though designed with a teenager in mind, this bathroom doesn’t feel limited to any specific age group. The materials are durable, the layout is functional, and the aesthetic is timeless enough to evolve. “We wanted to future-proof the space without making it feel too serious,” says Suzanne. This kind of flexibility means the bathroom can easily adapt into a guest suite, a young adult’s retreat. Conclusion: Playful Meets Practical Suzanne Jarvis’ scallop-themed teenager’s bathroom is a beautiful example of design that dares to play – but always with purpose. It speaks to its young user without talking down, balances softness with structure, and proves that even the most playful ideas can be executed with sophistication. At Kallums Bathrooms, we celebrate projects like these where creativity meets craftsmanship, and the bathroom becomes a canvas for self-expression, no matter your age.

Classic Character with a Contemporary Twist

Classic Character with a Contemporary Twist There is something special about a bathroom that balances timeless detail with modern ease. This design brings that harmony to life -rooted in tradition, but very much made for today. The standout feature is the Lefroy Brooks Classic 1900 Tubular Basin Mixer in polished nickel. Refined and well-proportioned, it brings quiet elegance to the basin. The same thoughtful design carries through to the Lefroy Brooks Classic Concealed Thermostatic Valve and Apron Shower Head, combining classic forms with reliable, everyday performance. Warmth and texture come in with the Campden vanity unit by Vanity Hall in walnut. Beautifully made and practical too, it’s a focal point that adds depth and natural character to the room. The shower is framed by the sleek View 01 screen from The Shower Lab – minimal and refined, it keeps the space feeling light and open while providing definition where needed. To finish, the La Fayette towel warmer by Bard & Brazier in matching polished nickel adds that touch of comfort and cohesion. It’s understated but considered, echoing the tone of the whole space. This is a bathroom with soul – a quiet blend of old and new that doesn’t try too hard, but gets everything just right. start your journey
