Founder Matthew Kallum on design, service, wellness and the thinking behind our bathrooms in Putney and Guildford.
There is something quietly rewarding about being recognised for the way you work.
This month, Kallums Bathrooms features in KBB Review, the trade magazine for the kitchen and bathroom industry, in a profile of our founder Matthew Kallum and the thinking behind our approach to bathroom design, supply and installation across London and Surrey.
The feature, titled Putting Service First, feels like a fitting description of what we have always tried to do.
Across three pages, Matthew talks about how bathroom design has evolved, why genuine service matters, the importance of having the right people around you and where he sees the future of bathroom design heading.
For a family-run business, it is a lovely opportunity to pause and look at how far we have come. Since opening our first showroom in Putney in 2016, Kallums Bathrooms has grown to include showrooms in both Putney and Guildford, while continuing to work with clients across London, Surrey and Hampshire.
What has not changed is the reason behind it all: creating beautiful, practical bathrooms that are designed around the people who use them.
The bathroom has changed considerably over the years.
Once treated primarily as a functional space, it has become an important part of the home, with homeowners increasingly willing to invest time, creativity and personality into its design.
As Matthew explains:
“You can do a lot more with a bathroom rather than just have four walls and tile everything and have a basin, tub and shower.”
That shift can be seen in the projects we work on every day. Colour, texture, proportion, lighting and finish all play a role in creating a bathroom that feels personal rather than purely practical.
From bold coloured tiles and brushed brass to softer bronze and nickel finishes, our bathroom case studies reflect just how varied modern bathroom design can be.

If there is one idea at the heart of the KBB Review feature, it is service.
Matthew talks about the value of offering a complete, end-to-end experience, with one team involved from the first design conversation through to product supply and installation.
It is an approach that keeps the different parts of a project connected. Our bathroom design service begins by understanding how you use your space, what you want from it and how you want it to feel. From there, the design, product specification and installation can be brought together as one project.
Our bathroom installation service is fully managed, with quality checks throughout the process and a two-year installation guarantee.
But for Matthew, service does not simply stop when the installation is complete.
“Even after that, customers would call us. We still go and help out. If there’s anything wrong with anything, we sort it out.”
That sense of responsibility is an important part of being a family-run business. The relationship does not have to end when the project does.
Good service ultimately comes down to people.
Matthew believes strongly in building a team around knowledge, personality and an understanding of how people live, rather than simply focusing on sales.
“We hire people with knowledge and with personalities to match that or to complement what we offer.”
That philosophy sits behind our design process, where every bathroom starts with a conversation.
The aim is not simply to fill a room with products. It is to understand the space, the people using it and what needs to work for them every day.
The industry itself has changed too. Rather than simply ordering products from suppliers, bathroom businesses and manufacturers are increasingly working together, sharing ideas and developing brands collectively.
As Matthew puts it:
“In the old days it used to be that you had an account with the supplier, you order, and then they deliver to you. Now it’s about building the brand together.”
Looking ahead, Matthew sees wellness as one of the most exciting areas of bathroom design.
Home saunas, steam rooms, shower toilets and generous walk-in showers are becoming increasingly popular as homeowners look at the bathroom as somewhere to relax as well as get ready for the day.
Travel has played a role too. Hotels and spas give people the opportunity to experience different ways of using a bathroom, and those experiences can inspire homeowners to be more adventurous in their own spaces.
We are seeing this reflected in everything from colourful bathroom tiles to home saunas and steam rooms, walk-in showers and calm, spa-inspired schemes.
“They expect a lot more, and have more courage. Consumers pick bold colours and designs and layouts. They’re not afraid of that.”
It is a direction we expect to see continue: bathrooms becoming more expressive, more personal and more closely connected to wellbeing.
When asked what advice he would give, Matthew keeps it simple.
“Good advice and genuine advice. That’s the key.”
It is perhaps the simplest way to sum up the philosophy behind Kallums Bathrooms.
A bathroom is a significant investment, and good design is not about recommending the most expensive option. It is about understanding what works for the space, the budget and the person living with it.
That means honest guidance from the first conversation through to the final detail.
At Kallums Bathrooms, we design, supply and install bespoke bathrooms across London, Surrey and Hampshire, working with some of the finest brands in the industry to create spaces that are made to last.
Our Putney showroom and Guildford showroom offer a chance to explore products, materials and ideas in person, while our design team can take your project from the first conversation through to the finished room.
If the feature has left you thinking about your own bathroom, book a consultation and talk to our team about your space, your ideas and what you want your bathroom to become.
