Interior designer Suzanne Jarvis strikes that balance effortlessly in one of her projects, a scallop-themed bathroom created for a young client with a love for all things pink and white. But this is more than a colour story, it’s a masterclass in creating a space that grows with its owner. Teenage Style, Enhanced Teenage years are all about self-expression, experimentation, and identity and, the spaces young people inhabit should reflect that spirit. Suzanne’s brief was simple: a bathroom in pink and white that felt fun but not childish. As with all well-executed interiors, the real magic lies in the layers. Rather than leaning into cliché or overly sweet tones, Suzanne chose a mature, design-led approach to colour and texture. The result? A space that feels light, joyful, and distinctly personal without losing the clarity and polish of a grown-up bathroom. The Scallop Statement At the heart of the design lies the scallop motif – soft, arching shapes that echo throughout the room in both subtle and striking ways. We didn’t want to go too thematic,” says Suzanne. “Instead, we used the scallop as a visual thread – almost like a whisper of personality that runs through the whole space.” The blush-pink tiles, sourced from Bert & May, gently reflect the light, creating ever-changing shadow patterns – a subtle, elegant way to introduce movement and depth. A Space to Grow With One of the project’s most successful qualities is its longevity. Though designed with a teenager in mind, this bathroom doesn’t feel limited to any specific age group. The materials are durable, the layout is functional, and the aesthetic is timeless enough to evolve. “We wanted to future-proof the space without making it feel too serious,” says Suzanne. This kind of flexibility means the bathroom can easily adapt into a guest suite, a young adult’s retreat. It’s an inspiring read we hope will spark ideas for your own project! Suzanne, can you tell us a little about your background and how you got into interior design? Suzanne: Absolutely! It was an unusual start as I was at university taking a teaching degree in PE, with art as my second subject, when I injured my back and ended up back in Dorset working in an Antiques showroom. I progressed to working in their interiors department where I was taken to London to meet the Osborne and Little team for an inspriational day out. 6 weeks later I had moved to London and secured my first job. I only meant to stay for a year, but 30 years on….. What’s your approach to bathroom design in particular? Suzanne: I treat bathrooms as personal sanctuaries. It’s all about balancing practicality with a calming, stylish atmosphere. Whether it’s a serene spa feel or a bold, modern look, I focus on materials, lighting, and layout to bring it all together. What do you enjoy most about working with the Kallums Bathrooms team? Suzanne: Kallums is fantastic to collaborate with -they truly understand the value of good design and quality products. Their showroom is inspiring, and their team is incredibly knowledgeable, which makes specifying fittings and finishes a joy. It’s a real partnership & over the years Alex and I have developed our own language and feel for the rooms we’re creating. Are there any current trends in bathroom design that you’re excited about? Suzanne: Yes! I love the shift toward textured surfaces -fluted finishes, stone-effect tiles, and brushed metals. There’s also a growing focus on wellness: integrated lighting, warm tones, and clever storage to create a calm, clutter-free environment. What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone planning a bathroom renovation? Suzanne: Invest in layout and lighting early on. Beautiful fittings are important, but the flow and atmosphere of the space come first. And always work with experts – like Kallums – who can guide you on technical and aesthetic choices. Lastly, what inspires your work day-to-day? Suzanne: My clients, always. Every project brings a new brief and a fresh personality to reflect.
